Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. As a child, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father passed away in a tragic way, which caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become a waitress or cleaner so that they could survive. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She was a student in Boston. She quit the school she was attending within two years of her education in pursuit of a career as an actor. The path was difficult to take. Even though she got an interview in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine but no theater jobs was offered. In New York, she was employed at a bar as a check-in girl before quitting before moving to Boston. There she was able to earn a living as an usherette by day, and at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first role as an actor. She was a drama student at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
